Generally speaking, Chemical peels remove damaged outer layers of skin on the face to smooth the texture, reduce scarring, and remove blemishes. The final product will be healthy, glowing, youthful and dewey complexion. There many types of chemical peels, ranging from mild to strong - alphahydroxy acids (AHAs), tricholoroacetic acid (TCA), malic acids, combination acids, salicylic acids, phenols and others. The formula strengths are tailored to meet each patients needs. Patients in Austin and other sunny areas must be careful about post-care instruction and timing to avoid exposing the skin to the harmful effects of sun rays.
Having a professional exfoliation every 4-6 weeks is an essential part of your skin care maintenance program. These treatments can be quick at either of our locations in Austin, simple and cost-effective. You can interchange microdermabrasions (MDA) with light chemical peels (LCP). Whereas MDA mechanically exfoliates your skin, as described above, LCP literally dissolve the bonds between your dead surface cells (stratum corneum) so that they can exfoliate and wash away, revealing a clearer and fresher looking skin. Over time, there is substantial evidence that they will also stimulate new collagen growth.
Patients at Aesthestica MedSpa on the maintenance program are encouraged to interchange LCP and MDA. They are given this option when they come for their appointment. Commonly used exfoliating acids include glycolic, salicylic, lactic, malic, retinoic, and mixtures of these. The most common series of treatments is the glycolic series, starting with a 20% and progressing to 30%, 40%, 50% and then usually 70%. These are excellent for really producing results that cannot be achieved with home-care products.
One of our favorite new peels is the Revitalize PeelT from Skin MedicaT. It is a combination of acids that is similar to a mild Jessner's Peel. We add a retinoic acid at the end of the peel and you simply walk out of the office with it still on your face. You will get a great exfoliating peel 3 days later. Lactic acid peels are also very helpful and moisturizing.
If you have a schedule that allows you to peel for a few days, this is a wonderful new peel that can produce great results in one week! It is a perfect perk-me-up before a big event. Allow a full week to ten days to recover.
For those who suffer from problematic acne in Austin, our salicylic peels are a miracle. They can make a difference in a very short period of time and within one month can help you control new break outs and eliminate the ravages of old breakouts. We use salicylic acid (it is attracted to the fat in your oil glands as opposed to being repelled by it.) It will almost immediately cauterize existing acne, though it causes a lot of flaking, I had one patient tell me once, "First you molt and then you look great after about a week." It was a wonderful explanation to anyone with active acne.
Our deeper Austin chemical peels, such as the Obagi Blue Peel using Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) is a true rejuvenation miracle. Think of it as a controlled chemical burn over your entire face. Because it goes deeper into your skin, it will help more substantially than lighter peels with brown spots and skin texture issues. It also has a wonderful tightening effect. We have some clients who do this treatment two times per year just for tightening.
The peel is performed by adding a blue dye to a very strong acid (TCA) and then customizing where we actually apply the acid. This peel can be used over any area of the body, even the upper and lower eyelids. You will remain bluish for a few days and then the outer layer of skin will peel. You will need at least a week off to do this treatment. At Aesthestica MedSpa, our physician performs almost all Blue PeelsT at Austin's Aesthetica MedSpa.
