Microdermabrasion improves mild to moderate sun damage, scarring, wrinkles and other superficial skin problems. A gentle stream of tiny particles exfoliates the outer layer of skin and provides a fresh, glowing, younger appearance. The particles scrape away the surface layer of aging or damaged skin, which is then brushed off with the microdermabrasion vacuum tool with no need for anesthesia. Only a small amount of skin is removed, so sensitive areas such as the face, chest, neck, arms and hands can be treated. Results are comparable to a light chemical peel and should be immediately visible. Microdermabrasion is often performed in conjunction with other skin renewal procedures, such as laser treatment and chemical peels. Multiple treatments are recommended for full effect.
In essence, microdermabrasion (MDA) is a medical procedure that can polish your skin with a very small, medical-grade sand blaster. The machine (costing up to $30,000) shoots a stream of inert, sterile aluminum crystals at a high rate of speed directly at your skin. The machine vacuums simultaneously. Some machines are crystalless and depend on a diamond tip to do the gentle polishing process.
In the hands of a skilled practitioner, you can work to gently "polish" away surface imperfections. Properly done, MDA provides a major improvement in the clarity and overall texture of your skin. It can reduce fi ne lines and wrinkles, give a clearer and fresher appearance, reduce the size or your pores and will certainly help with issues like uneven skin tone, recurrent blackheads and acne. It can even help with dreaded sebaceous hyperplasias. These are the little wart-looking bumps that have nothing in them but really mess up your complexion. They are overactive oil glands in which the cell structure has become enlarged. They occur frequently in the T-zone. There is very little else that will help these diminish in size or even go away.
At Aesthetica MedSpa, we always use Cool Touch in the correction or improvement of scars. There are not many treatments that are as effective at improving scars which also do not cause any down time.
MDA performed every 4-6 weeks does not allow dead, dry skin to accumulate and dull your appearance. At Aesthestica MedSpa, we have two levels of MDA so that all skin types can be helped. The maintenance MDA (a strong MDA without additional treatment) for on-going care or for those who do not have serious issues. And, the therapeutic MDA (strong MDA accompanied by chemical peel, extraction, and three other after treatments depending on your skin type). You must look for someone who is an excellent aesthetician and who gives value (i.e., does not overcharge you!). You need results and value so that you can repeat this treatment about every 4-6 weeks. It takes about that long for a developing skin cell to reach the surface of your skin. Over time, MDA will also help stimulate new collagen growth.
To make serious progress in the beginning, try a series of 6 aggressive treatments in 2 week intervals and then ease into an every 4-6 week schedule. You will achieve nice rejuvenation with this treatment. However, do not expect it to take the place of laser treatments or PhotofacialT. It cannot remove brown spots, for example. The bottom line is that microdermabrasion is a wonderful maintenance treatment that temporarily improves the smoothness and freshness of your skin.
