Is your skincare regime suitable for your age? Throughout our 20s, we tend not to worry too much about our aging skin, but when our 30s come around it’s definitely time to start thinking about the possible effects of getting older. No matter how good a condition your 30-year-old skin is, it’s important to prepare for the future and incorporate a skincare regime for Aging Prevention that will keep wrinkles and sagging skin at bay.

What happens to skin during our 30s?

Believe it or not, skin begins to lose collagen as early as our 30s. Collagen is responsible for keeping skin plumped, elastic and healthy, and without it wrinkles and fine lines start to take hold. It’s also common for us to begin to lose fat beneath the skin during our 30s, and this loss of volume can cause sagging or hollowness in areas around the eyes and cheeks. In order to reduce the effects of these changes, you need to make a few careful adjustments to your skincare routine.

1. Protect against sun damage

It goes without saying that you should protect your skin against the sun’s rays at any age, but your 30s is the time when sun damage – such as early wrinkling and pigmentation – will really start to show itself so you must be more careful about applying sunscreen. We recommend using broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and we advise wearing it on a daily basis, even when the weather is overcast, in order to fully protect yourself from the sun’s rays. Although you should be applying sunscreen on any parts of the body exposed to the sun, you should concentrate on the chest and face in particular as it is these areas that tend to be most damaged by the sun and which easily give away our age.

2. Use retinol

Retinol, a form of vitamin A, is a cellular growth factor which stimulates new collagen production, something very important since our bodies begin to lose collagen during our 30s. Many studies into topical retinols have shown them to have both long and short term effects, so by incorporating a good quality vitamin A cream into your skincare regime you can keep long-term aging at bay, as well as maintaining plump, healthy skin. One downside of topical retinols is that they can cause dryness and irritation, so to avoid flaking or inflammation you should begin with a low potency product and work your way up. Keeping skin hydrated also minimizes these side effects of retinol, so drink plenty of water and use deeply nourishing moisturizers alongside your retinol cream.

3. Try cosmetic injectables

Although you may not feel that you have wrinkles and lines significant enough for dermal fillers or neurotoxins right now, you shouldn’t rule out these types of injectables during your 30s. Using fillers and the likes of Botox early on can help to reduce or delay the appearance of deep set lines and wrinkles in the future. Dealing with minor lines or irregularities in skin texture now with mild Botox or fillers could prevent you from requiring significant surgical anti-aging procedures in future. Plus, by dealing with minor imperfections as they occur, you can keep the signs of aging at bay very naturally compared to undergoing major, dramatic procedures later on which will be far more noticeable by your friends and family.
