WHY REMOVE VARICOSE VEINS?
Varicose veins can be a real nuisance. Unwanted veins can be painful and unsightly. They can create self-esteem issues, like not wanting to wear shorts or a swimsuit. Most varicose veins, which can come in a variety of sizes and colors, can be treated quickly and efficiently with Sclerotherapy.
WHAT IS SCLEROTHERAPY?
A special solution is injected into each vein, which causes the vein to collapse and eventually be reabsorbed by the body.
Usually at least 2 to 3 treatments are needed to see ideal results. Our patients wear compression hose after the injections, which help to improve the effectiveness of the treatment. There are some lasers that are designed to treat these veins, but in our experience, these laser treatments work better on the veins of the face, especially around the nose and cheeks.
WHAT ARE SPIDER VEINS?
Spider Veins are small purple/red blood vessels that are often visible on the leg, ankle or foot. The exact cause is unknown, but heredity plays a strong role in the development of this condition. These should not be confused with varicose veins, which are larger, deeper veins that are usually lumpy and sometimes deeper purple in color. Varicose veins may sometimes cause leg discomfort, whereas spider veins are usually painless. Spider veins are progressive and often increase in number and visibility with age.
SPIDER VEIN TREATMENT
The oldest and most common treatment for spider veins on the legs is sclerotherapy. This involves the injection of a sclerosing agent into the veins, which irritates the vessels, causing them to scar and become less noticeable. Often, the veins do not actually go away, but become less visible because of the reaction around the walls of the vein. The injections may cause slight discomfort, especially if saline is used, but the pain does not last very long.
HOW CAN I SPOT VARICOSE VEINS?
- Varicose veins usually are larger in size
- Varicose veins tend to bulge
More than one treatment is usually required since all the veins will not respond to the first treatment. Since this is a progressive condition, the patient can expect new spider veins to occur over time, which may require treatment every few years to maintain clear skin.
