HOW TO ADD VOLUME TO THE NOSE WITH NON-SURGICAL RHINOPLASTY

Surgical rhinoplasty is often performed to add volume to the nose as well as to trim down the size and shape. Adding volume to the nose can strengthen it, make it more symmetrical, and improve the appearance of deviations such as a bump on the bridge of the nose. Although it can be successful, adding volume via surgical rhinoplasty is an expensive, painful and potentially risky procedure which many people simply do not want to put their bodies through. In these cases, non-surgical alternatives, in the form of dermal fillers, are possible.

WHY IS SURGICAL RHINOPLASTY SO INVASIVE?

When adding volume to the nose, it is necessary to take cartilage from elsewhere in the body and manipulate it to add structure to the nose. Cartilage can be taken from the septum, ears or ribs, and though each different type of cartilage has its own pros and cons, not one is totally perfect for the job so they could potentially fail. Furthermore, the process of harvesting donor cartilage adds an extra aspect to the surgery and recovery, opening up increased risk of infection and discomfort.

IS THERE A NON-SURGICAL ALTERNATIVE TO EXPENSIVE AND PAINFUL SURGERY?

Dermal fillers can be a brilliant alternative to surgical rhinoplasty when adding volume to the nose. They are not permanent, but this is a positive aspect for many patients who are worried that they may not like the results of the procedure. Downtime with dermal fillers is minimal and there is only a small amount of discomfort associated with the procedure since most fillers contain local anesthetic lidocaine to relieve pain. Some fillers can take on a more permanent form if they are the ones that build collagen structures where injected. There are many different types of dermal fillers which can be used for non-surgical rhinoplasty, including Juvederm and Radiesse, but one of the most popular is Restylane-L. This hyaluronic acid-based filler is completely reversible, which means that the doctor administering the injections can quickly dissolve the substance if it ends up traveling into the wrong area. It is suitable for use in most areas of the nose, and its effects last for up to a year before the procedure must be repeated. With Radiesse, however, you will have a longer lasting effect.

WHERE CAN VOLUME BE ADDED?

Most areas of the nose can have volume added if it appears too flat or low. The bridge, sidewall and tip are some of the most common areas to be filled, as it is very easy to even out the surface of the nose and improve the shape when working in these areas.
