Here in Austin skincare routines are being changed up as we welcome in the cooler fall temperatures. It’s feeling far less humid at the moment, and in no time at all we’ll be gearing up for even colder, drier conditions as fall turns to winter. The question is, what exactly should we be doing for our skin during fall season? Here are five key skincare habits you should start to adopt.

1. Switch to a Gentler Cleanser

Cold, dry air can sap moisture from our skin and leave it feeling chapped, dry and flaky in the fall. Don’t put any more pressure on it by using a harsh cleanser! In summer we tend to sweat and turn to harsh cleansers to avoid breakouts, but the humid conditions allow our skin to hold up well against these intense cleansing routines. In fall, turn to more gentle, moisturizing cleaners which will nourish and protect skin from all those unpleasant weather conditions.

2. Switch to a Heavier Moisturizer

As we discussed above, skin can dry out in the fall and it will only get drier as it gets closer to winter. Start using a heavier moisturizer now – lotion types are best because they help to create a shield on the skin which keeps natural oils and moisture locked in. Make moisturizing a twice-daily habit too – once in the morning, and once before bed.

3. Exfoliate Regularly

With dry skin common in Fall, it’s important to exfoliate regularly to rid your skin of dead skin cells and to keep it looking smooth, bright and fresh. Exfoliating will also help your skincare products, particularly the moisturizers mentioned above, seep deep down into your skin and be as efficient as possible. Make exfoliating a part of your weekly skincare routine for the best results.

4. Use Sunscreen

Everyone knows the importance of wearing sunscreen during summer, but their use of SPF products tends to fall by the wayside when fall comes around. Big mistake! Harmful UV rays are still all around us, even on cold, overcast days, and not only can they cause premature aging but they can also lead to melanoma. Protect your skin with SPF products all year round, no matter the weather.

5. Focus on Rejuvenation Procedures

Just as the trees shed their leaves, fall is the perfect time for you to shed summer sun damage and rejuvenate your skin for the new season. There are plenty of skin rejuvenation procedures to choose from, but these are our favorites:

– Chemical Peels

These topical treatments cause a control shedding of the very top layers of skin cells to reveal brand new, fresh and revitalized cells underneath. Our Ogabi Blue peels are incredibly popular at this time of year because they provide a medium depth peel which helps to reduce the appearance of sun spots and gently tighten and plump the skin to give a more youthful appearance – they’re a brilliant way to look and feel revitalized for fall.

– Laser Treatments

The likes of Fractora, Invasix, and Photofacial IPL work to smooth out uneven skin tone and resurface the skin to create a brighter, fresher and more even complexion. Since many of these treatments require you to minimize your exposure to the sun afterwards, fall is the perfect time of year to give them a try.

– Micodermabrasion

Microneedling and microdermabrasion is the process of creating thousands of microscopic lesions in the skin in order to stimulate the healing process and the production of collagen and elastin. It can really brighten up the complexion and smooth the skin, making it a brilliant procedure for waving goodbye to any sun damage you may have sustained in the summer months.
