WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A CHEMICAL PEEL?
Our chemical peels are designed to remove damaged facial skin and help create a beautiful, clear complexion. This dermatological procedure will smooth skin texture, reduce scarring, and remove blemishes. When administered by a skilled cosmetic dermatologist, this treatment will result in a healthy, glowing, youthful and dewy appearance. There are many types of chemical peels, ranging from mild to strong – alphahydroxy acids (AHAs), tricholoroacetic acid (TCA), malic acids, combination acids, salicylic acids, phenols and others. We tailor our chemical peel formula strengths to meet each patient’s individual needs. HOW OFTEN DO I NEED A CHEMICAL PEEL?
Having a professional exfoliation every 4-6 weeks is an essential part of your skincare maintenance program. These treatments are fast and easy at our med spa in Austin. Simple and cost-effective, you can interchange microdermabrasions (MDA) with light chemical peels (LCP). Whereas MDA mechanically exfoliates your skin, as described above. LCP literally dissolves the bonds between your dead surface cells (stratum corneum), so that they can exfoliate and wash away, revealing clearer, revitalized looking skin. There is substantial evidence that chemical peels will also stimulate new collagen growth over time.
OUR CHEMICAL PEEL MAINTENANCE PROGRAM
Patients on the maintenance program are encouraged to interchange LCP and MDA. Our team will go over these options when you come for your appointment. Commonly used exfoliating acids include glycolic, salicylic, lactic, malic, retinoic, and mixtures of these. The most common series of treatments is the glycolic series, starting with 20% and progressing to 30%, 40%, 50% and then usually 70%. These chemical peels are excellent for producing results that cannot be achieved with over the counter home-care products.
OUR SPECIALTY CHEMICAL PEELS
One of our favorite new peels is the Revitalize Peel from Skin Medica. It is a combination of acids that is similar to a mild Jessner’s Peel. We add a retinoic acid at the end of the peel and you simply walk out of the office with it still on your face. You will get a great exfoliating peel 3 days later. Lactic acid peels are also very helpful and moisturizing.
THE NEW VI-PEEL HAS PRODUCED EXCITING RESULTS
If you have a schedule that allows you to peel for a few days, this is a wonderful new peel that can produce great results in one week! The VI Peel is a perfect perk-me-up before a big event. Allow a full week to ten days for recovery.

We can also advise you on alternative methods for scar removal and skin rejuvenation.
HOW DOES THE SUN AFFECT CHEMICAL PEELS?
Our chemical peel patients in Austin and other sunny areas must be careful about post-care instruction and timing to avoid exposing the skin to the harmful effects of sun rays. Consult with your doctor before directly exposing yourself to the sun, before or after a chemical peel procedure. Avoid direct sunlight where possible and keep your skin properly moisturized. If you need to be in the sun after getting a chemical peel, be sure to use high SPF sunblock (SPF 25 or above). Once new skin has fully covered the treated area you may consult your doctor to see if you can resume normal activities.
WHAT CAN CHEMICAL PEELS DO FOR PROBLEMATIC ACNE?
If you suffer from problematic acne and are looking for acne treatment in Austin, our salicylic peels are a miracle acne treatment. They can make a difference in a very short period of time and within one month can help you control new breakouts and eliminate the damage of old breakouts. For reliable, safe results, we use salicylic acid in our acne treatments (it is attracted to the fat in your oil glands as opposed to being repelled by it.) Upon application, our chemical peels will almost immediately begin working to cauterize existing acne. We had one patient tell us once, “First you molt and then you look great after about a week.” It was a wonderful explanation to anyone with active acne. Flaking is a natural effect of chemical peels for acne. Make sure you have appropriate downtime after the procedure and remember to consult your doctor if you think the peeling is excessive or lasting too long.
WHEN SHOULD I GET A DEEPER CHEMICAL PEEL?
Our deeper chemical peels in Austin, such as the Obagi Blue Peel using Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) is a true skin rejuvenation miracle. Think of it as a controlled chemical cleansing over your entire face. Because it goes deeper into your skin, it will help more substantially with brown spots and skin texture issues. It also has a wonderful tightening effect. Some clients do this treatment two times per year just for tightening.
The peel is performed by adding a blue dye to a powerful acid (TCA) and then customizing where we actually apply the acid. This peel can be used over any area of the body, even the upper and lower eyelids. You will remain bluish for a few days and then the outer layer of skin will peel. You will need at least a week off to fully recover from this treatment.
