If you are suffering from acne in the Austin area, the first step to take before considering treatment is identifying the type of acne that you are dealing with. More mild forms of acne can be improved significantly with inexpensive over the counter products, whereas more serious types of acne can require doctor intervention. It’s no secret that acne appears when the pores get blocked by oil, dirt, or bacteria. Some very common types of acne you have heard of are whiteheads or blackheads. However, there are other types of acne that are much more severe and not as easy to treat; including moderate acne all the way up to cystic acne, which is a very rare and painful form of acne. If you are suffering from acne, we have listed below different levels to give you a better idea of the type of acne you may be dealing with at this point.

GRADE 1 – MILD ACNE

Most people have had some form of Grade 1 or mild acne. This mild acne includes whiteheads, blackheads, or small minor pimples. Mild acne is usually hormonal and can be treated easily with typical items you’ll find in your local pharmacy or retail store. A good treatment for mild acne is Benzoyl Peroxide, which will dry out your skin and, for the most part, relieve you of Grade 1 acne troubles.

GRADE II – MODERATE ACNE

More uncommon, but we wouldn’t consider it rare at Aesthetica Med Spa in Austin, is Grade II or moderate acne. This type of acne is classified as moderate when anywhere from 10-40 small raised pus filled pimples are noticeable throughout one’s face or beyond. Inflammation of the skin is now more apparent and bacteria causes inflamed breakouts to be more obvious. In teens, you may see the acne progress from the nose and forehead to other areas of the face. Acne may start to affect the chest and shoulders, with occasional breakouts on the back, especially in males. Adult women may find greater breakout activity in the cheeks, chin, and jaw line area, especially just before and during the menstrual cycle. Moderate acne can be treated at home using over the counter products as well, but if acne does not improve in a few weeks it is time to see your local Austin dermatologist.

GRADE III – SEVERE ACNE

Moving onto one of the more rare types of acne, Grade III or severe acne. If you have severe acne your skin will be inflamed and reddened. This different type of acne will usually be present on the face and on other parts of the body as well including chest, neck, upper back, and shoulders. Severe acne is usually treated with both a topical and a prescription from the dermatologist.

GRADE IV – CYSTIC ACNE

The most severe, rare and different form of acne is that of cystic acne. The first noticeable trait of cystic acne is that the fact that it is very painful. Basically, it is acne that has expanded into a cyst. If you don’t give importance to its treatment and don’t cure it in an effective way then it would prove harmful for you. Irritating and burning sensations are the common attributes of cystic acne. They also become a cause of distress and embarrassment in social situations. Getting rid of this type of acne can be a difficult task and it’s highly advised you visit our Austin medical spa immediately upon noticing your acne becoming severe.
